Era noto per il suo ruolo di Jett Jackson in The Famous Jett Jackson e come Chris Comer nel film Friday Night Lights. Il suo ultimo ruolo da protagonista è stato quello del detective della polizia di Boston Barry Frost in Rizzoli & Isles.
Young è nato a Columbia, South Carolina, il 1° febbraio 1984. Ha studiato alla University of Southern California. Thompson si è suicidato sparandosi nel suo appartamento di Los Angeles, California, il 19 agosto 2013. Aveva 29 anni.
