Era nato a Rotherhithe, Londra, Inghilterra, il 16 ottobre 1922. È stato sposato con Gladys Murray dal 1942 fino alla sua morte nel 2011; hanno avuto una figlia. Bygraves è morto il 31 agosto 2012 a Hope Island, Queensland, Australia, per il morbo di Alzheimer; aveva 89 anni.
