Il Matthew Shepard Act, ufficialmente chiamato Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, è un atto del Congresso che è stato approvato il 22 ottobre 2009, e firmato in legge dal presidente Barack Obama il 28 ottobre. L'atto aggiunge i crimini che sono commessi a causa del sesso, dell'orientamento sessuale, dell'identità di genere o della disabilità delle vittime alla legge federale sui crimini d'odio del 1969.
La legge è la prima legge federale che dà protezione legale alle persone che sono transgender.
