Il Academy Award per la migliore canzone originale è uno dei riconoscimenti assegnati annualmente dall'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Il premio è destinato agli autori di canzoni — cioè ai compositori e ai parolieri — che scrivono una canzone originale e composta appositamente per un film. Solo le canzoni che soddisfano questi requisiti di originalità possono concorrere.

Storia sintetica

La categoria è stata istituita e assegnata per la prima volta alla settima edizione degli Academy Awards, che premiò i film del 1934. Da allora la sezione ha riconosciuto brani di generi diversi e ha accompagnato l'evoluzione della musica nei film.

Criteri di eleggibilità

  • La canzone deve essere originale e scritta specificamente per il film.
  • Il premio è assegnato agli autori della canzone (compositore e/o paroliere), non ai soli interpreti, salvo che questi non abbiano anche firmato la parte musicale o testuale.
  • Le norme concrete che definiscono l'eleggibilità (ad esempio l'uso della canzone nel film, i crediti obbligatori, la data di pubblicazione) vengono specificate e aggiornate periodicamente dall'Academy.

Processo di selezione e voto

  1. Le candidature vengono normalmente proposte e valutate dalla branca musicale dell'Academy — in particolare da autori e compositori — che seleziona le nomination ufficiali.
  2. Tutti i membri votanti dell'Academy partecipano alla scelta finale del vincitore tra le nomination proposte.
  3. Il regolamento prevede procedure di verifica dell'eleggibilità e può richiedere materiale documentale a supporto della candidatura.

Impatto e punti pratici

  • Il premio contribuisce a riconoscere l'importanza della musica originale come elemento narrativo e commerciale del film.
